Aiguillettes
Ornamentation of certain military and naval equipment, including woven loops hanging over the shoulders and on clothing that ends with pencil-like points. "aiguillette" is an embroidered yarn with decorative metal tips worn on the uniform or as part of other costumes such as an educational garment, in which it would mean honor. This use of "aiguillette" comes from the lacing used to bind plate weapons together. Thus, a knot or loop was used that hung from the shoulder. These aiguillettes should not be confused with lanyards, which are strands that are also worn from the shoulder (or neck), but have no straight aiguillette tips and are usually fiber rather than gold or silver cords, and are usually not woven. Modern aglet tips or shoelaces and decorative tips on bolo tires are ambiguous aiguillettes.
